Carmen
About This Event
State Opera South Australia stages a bold new Carmen at Her Majesty's Theatre, directed by Laura Hansford with South Australian Charlotte Kelso in the title role — four performances only.
Bizet's Carmen is one of the most performed operas in the world, and one of the most recognisable — the Habanera, the Toreador Song and the overture are woven into popular culture. In this new staging for State Opera South Australia, emerging director Laura Hansford keeps the opera's original 1825 Seville setting but views it through a lens of maximalist surrealism.
Hansford's production centres on Carmen herself: a woman who refuses to belong to anyone, and whose insistence on her own freedom drives the story to its tragic end. It asks pointed questions about autonomy and obsession, and about how we have long cast her as a femme fatale.
