Oedipus
About This Event
Richard Roxburgh and Heather Mitchell star in Robert Icke's Olivier and Tony-nominated Oedipus — the Greek tragedy reborn as an election-night political thriller — at the Festival Theatre for Adelaide Festival.
British writer-director Robert Icke has built a reputation for tearing classic texts open and rebuilding them for now. His Oedipus, after Sophocles, has already triumphed in the West End and on Broadway, earning Olivier and Tony Award nominations along the way. Now Adelaide Festival and Sydney Theatre Company bring it to Australia.
Icke recasts the myth as a contemporary political thriller. It is election night and the count has begun; Oedipus is heading for a landslide. His wife has gathered the family for what should be a celebration — a close family, a loving marriage — until a buried secret starts to surface and everything begins to unravel.
